Rhode Island Red

This is the classic backyard chicken. They were developed in Rhode Island (and unimaginatively named) in the early 20th century. They are excellent layers of brown eggs. We have two of these birds at home and love them for their perky personalities and hardy constitution. See the picture to the right.

Barred Plymouth Rock

Another American classic! A Breed dating back to the early 1800’s, these girls make great laying hens and are well suited to foraging for some of their own food. Lays brown eggs. Attractive, cold hardy and productive, with a good temperament around the yard - a truly great chicken for the urban homestead.

Buff Orpington

Cute, puffy and (sometimes) even cuddly. This breed dates to the late 1800’s in England. The Orpington is becoming the most popular backyard chicken in the States. They are reliable layers of brown eggs. Because of their plumage, they are very cold tolerant. While they tolerate confinement well but will benefit from exercise.

Ameraucana

Known as the ‘Easter Egg Chicken’ this hen lays green eggs (no ham)! Actually, the eggs may range from green to blue and, rarely, plain old brown. They are a South American breed and have great personalities. We love our Ameraucana for her sweet disposition and active charm.

Golden Campine

Truly beautiful birds, the Golden Campine is an old Belgian breed. They are on the smaller side and lay white eggs. They seldom become ‘broody’ so they are consistent layers. These are active hens who appreciate the opportunity for exercise.

Gold Laced Wyandotte

Many people consider this the most beautiful chicken of them all. A fine, lace-like pattern of feathers is unlike any chicken I’d ever seen. A good layer and forager, this American breed is cold hardy and productive. Lays brown eggs.

Light Brahmas

An old breed from India, this bird has feathered feet, is a good layer, and has a docile personality. It will make a very unusual addition to your flock!
